This early Jefferson Airplane tune was so much ahead it's time already. Other Bands needed quite
longer to create a similiar sound - and some then only imitated the Jefferson Airplane style. But that's
in fact really nice, because if you're a JA fan as I am, then you surely agree, that there can't be enough
sound like the one JA created in their early years! Relaxed guitar play, soft male hashbury voice.
Furthermore, this is one here is an alternative take from 1966. The lyrics are pretty groovy as well:

[1967] Phluph - Another Day

This song sounds like Jefferson Airplane or Peanut Butter Conspiracy mixed with some underground psychedelia and very early Pink Floyd. They released an self-titeld album in 1968 (Verve 5054). Saidly I don't have it, but I added it on my wishlist and may post it when I found it :). "Another Day" is the A-side of the single; Verve VK10564 and got released in 1967. [1966] Ashes - Roses Gone

Sweet female voice, great music! Sounds a bit like Mamas & Papas, with some groovy guitar playing by John Merill. They only released 1 album called "The Ashes" in 1966.

[1969] It's A Beautiful Day - Love For You (Bulgaria)

Released in 1969 on the legendary selftitled album "It's A Beautiful Day". But before the then two
year old band already released the single "Bulgaria / Aquarian Dream" in 1968. Sweet San Francisco
Psychedelic Rock, the singing á la Jefferson Airplane... and a violin taking a leading role. Pretty
uncommon in those days, but well fitting.

And many thanks for some great info's by "Anonymous" about this song:
The single "Bulgaria" was mis-titled by their manager Matthew Katz. The song (which also 
appeared on the Pipe Dream comp) is called "Love For You" (which is obvious when you listen to 
it!). The flipside, although good, is nothing to do with the IABD band at all, and was more Matthew 
Katz "magaing".

[1968] Listening - Stoned Is

The Listening were a Boston based band, that only released one album and two singles. Michael 
Tschudin, one of the members, also played in another Boston psych act, called "Cynara". They put
out an alternate version of this track on LP two years later, which sounds like a soft Deep Purple
variant had covered it... (on youtube). It's been some years, since I listened to the whole album, but I
remember, that it wasn't as good as I expected it to be after I was flashed immediately by "Stoned is",
which I heared on some obscure garage-psych compilation (was it the "Marijuana Unknowns"?).
However, the vocals are in this certain higher tone hashbury style, which you can here on several
Jefferson Airplane songs as well. The hammond organ and the soft electric guitar play pay tribute to
the title. It's a relaxed but intoxicating experience!

The Byrds mixed up with the Mamas & Papas and Jefferson Airplane, ready is the Peanut Butter Conspiracy. This song makes the sound liquid and the colors shiny. Pay attention to the lyrics ;).

This song is taken from Bill Synth's great "Acid & Flowers" compilation, that got released in the 90's by "Timothy's Brain". One of the best psych comps around by the way! But, what to say else about it? Huh... ! Well, the mood of this track is placed somewhere between the Ultimate Spinach and Jefferson Airplane - maybe you noticed, I have a predilection for that chorus like soft psych, as well as for organs, so "Lantern Gospel" is beaming me up once again!

Luckily someone band-familiar shared some words about the band on Crud Crud's blog. Since I'm not the one, being familiar with them, I prefer to qoute those lines here: "I must admit, I think the song is kinda cheesy. However, a studio band the World Column was not. They were orignally known as the Segrams (ave.. age was 15 y.o.) They were on the road giggin' almost nightly for years a range of 20,000 miles a year. During this time,they shared the stage with performers such as Jackson 5, Aerosmith, Dave Clark 5, Herman's Hermits, Sonny and Cher. When they recorded these 2 45's they were still teenagers. These guys studied music-one in Sweeden, one at the Chicago Conservatory of Music, and one at Indiana University. Studio heads lookin for a one hit wonder-no. Talented kids who rocked the stage-ask anyone from the midwest from this era. Most of these guys went on to raise families. I'd love to say as a teenager I had this type of experience and then 40 years later people are bloggin about my music. I just found that their song So Is the Sun is found on 6 different complilation CD's produced between 2000 and 2006. Rock on. Benoit and Meyer-rest in peace. Be proud Kaplan and Boller."

[1967] The Peanut Butter Conspiracy - Too Many Do

"Too Many Do" is taken from the Butter's "The Great Conspiracy" album, actually their best one,
although the "Is Spreading" album makes a wonderful walldecore! I was really surprised, when I
heared The Peanut Butter Conspiracy the very first time, as they sound quite similiar to
Jefferson Airplane, who's pre-1969 sound I more then adore! You know what I mean, that choral
vocals, hash-drenched atmosphere, incense and ballons etc. ....

[1966] The Doppler Effect - God Is Alive In Argentina

I actually saw this band live at 1601 W Evans (The Family Dog) in Denver sometime in '67. They were more of a Jefferson Airplane style band than Byrds. Female singer, lots of jangly guitars with folk-style harmonies. Live they were pretty good, certainly better than the production on this recording. Didn't get much airplay locally and definitely not nationally.I think (not sure) they were originally from Colorado, went to CA, made 1 record (a single), then disappeared. ~by davequ

I don't know, why it took me so long to discover this great band! on their debut album from 1968 they combine the early Jefferson Airplane sound with that of the psychedelic songs from the Peanut Butter Conspiracy. Also a heavy load Psychedelic Folk-Rock rythmns mashed up by Garage Rock. The song you can listen to above is a nice example for their sound (totally stoned!!). Get the complete album if you can!

[1967] The Chocolate Watchband - No Way Out

The Chocolate Watchband released this song on 45 with a B-Side called "Are You Gonna Be There?
(At the Love In)". Early Psychedelic Rock with typical guitar playing á la Jefferson Airplane, ending
with great overdubbed effects. Enjoy!

[1968] Lollipop Shoppe - Underground Railroad

Checking out the Lollipop Shoppe's first and only album "Just Colour" was first surprising and then a bit disappointing. The best track on this album is indeed "Underground Railroad". It's a very strong song, a bit dark and maybe even acherontic. A hint of oriental melodies combined with bassy Jefferson Airplane sound and garagy trashing drums and voices. It's just great!
