Wild in the Streets (Movie, 1968)

I recently watched the '68 movie "Wild in the Streets". well, what can I say, I'm a bit disappointed. if you ask me it's a pretty stupid movie. the story is about a bunch of young and rich pseudo-hippies overtaking the government. but below the coat of peace-symbols, joints, colourful cloths and tripping teens, they are acting in an equal violent way than the older generation did and in the end nothing changes really much except for thousands of families are psychically disbanded, shocked, traumatized and through the forced consume of LSD in boot camps. but til the the end, no reflection happens in the storytelling of the movie. I assume it was rather meant to be entertaining and funny, but behind the dogmas of the colourful sixties it's not really amusing see all of this.however, the reason, why I watched this movie, was, that A.) it's from the 60's B.) it seemed psychedelic from what I heared about it and C.) the soundtrack is unbelievable good!! and that's still fact, despite the movie content. "Max Frost & The Troopers" where no real band, even if they released an album after success of the film and additionally to the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, wich feat. Les Baxters (as "The Senators"), Jerry Howard, The Second Time, The Gurus, and finally The 13th Power, wich - if I remember it right and the rumours are true - feat. Davie Allen & The Arrows.

Read a very informative review of the movie here: http://www.videowatchdog.blogspot.de/2006/01/14-or-shop.html

below I posted a version of the radio hit "Shape of Things to Come". I hope it doesn't get blocked again too soon by youtube.

[1968] The World Column - Lantern Gospel

listen to the song:
Picture taken from the psychedelic underground
movie "The Invasion of Thunderbolt Pagoda"

This song is taken from Bill Synth's great "Acid & Flowers" compilation, that got released in the 90's by "Timothy's Brain". One of the best psych comps around by the way! But, what to say else about it? Huh... ! Well, the mood of this track is placed somewhere between the Ultimate Spinach and Jefferson Airplane - maybe you noticed, I have a predilection for that chorus like soft psych, as well as for organs, so "Lantern Gospel" is beaming me up once again!
Luckily someone band-familiar shared some words about the band on Crud Crud's blog. Since I'm not the one, being familiar with them, I prefer to qoute those lines here: "I must admit, I think the song is kinda cheesy. However, a studio band the World Column was not. They were orignally known as the Segrams (ave.. age was 15 y.o.) They were on the road giggin' almost nightly for years a range of 20,000 miles a year. During this time, they shared the stage with performers such as Jackson 5, Aerosmith, Dave Clark 5, Herman's Hermits, Sonny and Cher. When they recorded these 2 45's they were still teenagers. These guys studied music-one in Sweeden, one at the Chicago Conservatory of Music, and one at Indiana University. Studio heads lookin for a one hit wonder-no. Talented kids who rocked the stage-ask anyone from the midwest from this era. Most of these guys went on to raise families. I'd love to say as a teenager I had this type of experience and then 40 years later people are bloggin about my music. I just found that their song So Is the Sun is found on 6 different complilation CD's produced between 2000 and 2006. Rock on. Benoit and Meyer-rest in peace. Be proud Kaplan and Boller."

[1968] Ultimate Spinach - Your Head is Reeling

listen to the song:

The Ultimate Spinach is an legendary project, founded by Ian Bruce-Douglas and a couple of friends from the non existing 60's Boston scene. You might wonder about the band's obscure name. if so, read what Ian has to say about it: "...One day, in 1967, I was in my room, tripping on some really pure LSD.  I started looking at myself in the mirror and my face was doing funny things.  I had a bunch of colored markers I used to draw with.  I grabbed a green one and started drawing all these psychedelic designs on my face.  When I was done, I looked at myself and said “Whoa!  I am ultimate spinach.  Ultimate spinach is me!”  A couple of months later, I started “The Underground Cinema” and when we signed with The Parasite, I changed the band’s name to “Ultimate Spinach” for “luck”.  Some luck!"
the first two albums of the 'Spinach, where really masterpieces, but then it began to crumble within the band and conflicts increased. Ian left the band after they recorded their second album "Behold & See". the thrid album is, - to be honest - not even worth to listen to. However, if you interested in more information about the Band's history, you can read an interview with Ian at Klemen's "It's Psychedelic Baby" magazine:

[1967] Strawberry Alarm Clock - Incense and Peppermints

listen to the song:

"baaaahhh, aaah, baaaahhh, aaaaah, ..." the Alarmclock's '67 single "Incense and Peppermints / The Birdman of Alcatrash" is a landmark in the history of the psychedelic music of the 60's. to be honest, their full length debut is really awesom! gentle and soft psych pop melodies merge there with rocking tunes and touches toward jazz. "The Birdman of Alcatrash" for example is another great piece, wich becomes very surreal shortly after it beginns. more tracks from the album are coming someday for sure! the soundtrack of the '68 psychedelic cult-movie "Psych-Out" (starring Susan Strasberg, Jack Nicholson, Dean Stockwell and others...) also feat. a nice selection of Strawberry Alarm Clock songs. below you'll find the trailer:

The lyrics:
Ba-ba, ba-ba
Ba-ba, ba-ba

Good sense, innocence, cripplin' mankind
Dead kings, many things I can't define
Occasions, persuasions clutter your mind
Incense and peppermints, the color of time

Who cares what games we choose?
Little to win, but nothin' to lose

Incense and peppermints, meaningless nouns
Turn on, tune in, turn your eyes around
Look at yourself, look at yourself, yeah, yeah
Look at yourself, look at yourself, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

To divide the cockeyed world in two
Throw your pride to one side, it's the least you can do
Beatniks and politics, nothin' is new
A yardstick for lunatics, one point of view

Who cares what games we choose?
Little to win, but nothin' to lose

Good sense, innocence, cripplin' mankind
Dead kings, many things I can't define
Occasions, persuasions clutter your mind
Incense and peppermints, the color of time

Who cares what games we choose?
Little to win, but nothin' to lose

Incense, peppermints
Incense, peppermints

Sha-la-la
Sha-la-la
Sha-la-la
Sha-la-la
Sha-la-la
Sha-la-la

[1968] The Lemon Fog - Summer

listen to the song:

The spacey psychedelic sound of The Lemon Fog never sounded better with all their singles, previously unreleased outtakes, and complete version of 'Summer, ' all from the original master tapes. Hailing from Houston, Texas, The Lemon Fog blew many minds during 1967- 68, quickly becoming a popular draw at the local Houston hot spot, The Living Eye. Their first single 'Theme For The Living Eye' (changed to 'Lemon Fog' upon release) was a psych- pop flower power masterpiece released in the winter of 1967. The B- side 'Echoes of Time' was nothing short of brilliant, reminiscent of the British psych scene. In June, 1968, the second Lemon Fog single, 'Summer, ' was released and remains the signature track of the band with its moody and introspective sound, unusual for a summer themed song. 'Summer' should have been a number one hit. The Lemon Fog's third and final single, 'The Prisoner' and 'Day By Day' was released in November 1968, but also failed to chart. The surreal lyrics and tight playing of The Lemon Fog obfuscate the fact that the members were in high school when these sophisticated psychedelic masterpieces were recorded. (~Cicadelic Records)

[1968] July - Dandelion Seeds

listen to the song:

July are an excellent example of UK Psychedelia. on their '68 debut album a fine blend of weird reverb and trippy stereo shenanigans drives their songs. most of them consist of a strong pop-vein that might be typical for records from the late 60's UK psych scene. on some tracks a sitar and eastern melodies emerge and build a kind of highlight for the whole album in my opinion. Dandelion Seeds appears to be a bit stoned and reaches it's peak with the dreamy passage somewhere in the middle of the playtime.

[1968] The Pretty Things - Bracelets Of Fingers

listen to the song:

It's been a while again since the last post. at the moment I'm quite busy with my shop and label. however, here's another great track for you to enjoy! "Bracelets Of Fingers" is taken from the Pretty Things best album, the "S.F. Sorrow". a huge load of british psychedelic pop in a mixed vein of the early Pink Floyd, the Beatles in Pepperland and UK popsike... oh and maybe a bit of the Who's musical "Tommy" feeling. groovy effects, swirling vocals, sitar and everything you need.

[1968] The Bojax - Don't Look Back

listen to the song:

Greenville, SC, freakbeat combo Bojax formed in 1964. Originally dubbed "the Knights," the group was founded by singer/guitarist Bobby Holliday, guitarists Roy Woods and Edwin Bayne, bassist Mack Sanders, and drummer Lyn Cook. Changing their name to the Bojax -- a moniker inspired by the box artwork of a Big Daddy Roth model kit, according to an interview with Holliday at the website www.60sgaragebands.com -- the band regularly played local school functions, but with a median age of just 14 years old, most venues were off-limits. After Holliday assumed lead vocals on "Know a Lot About Love," a single by fellow Greenville band the Wyld, Bojax began making plans to cut their own record -- signing to the local Panther label, in late 1967, they issued their debut single, "Hippie Times," a local hit now better known for its B-side, "Go Ahead and Cry," a "Like a Rolling Stone"-influenced rocker that resurfaced decades later on the popular Back to the Grave reissue series. Bassist Jim Summey replaced Sanders for the follow-up, a cover of the Remains' "Don't Look Back" that proved a local smash in the spring of 1968. The third Bojax single, "So Glad," was written by Jim Stafford of "Spiders and Snakes" fame, who also overdubbed lead guitar on the session. College and military duties soon forced the group to disband, although in 1969 Holliday and Cook formed a new Bojax lineup with guitarist Philip Maynard and bassist Van Stout. After he was wounded in Vietnam, Bayne returned to Greenville in 1970 and recruited Holliday, Sanders, and Cook to form a new group, a heavy rock band dubbed William Goat. This iteration of the band called it quits in 1971. Holliday later recorded a pair of solo albums, Home Grown and Another Stage, in addition to serving as a staff songwriter with the Nashville-based Milsap/Galbrath Publishing. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi

[1968] Lollipop Shoppe - Underground Railroad

listen to the song:

Checking out the Lollipop Shoppe's first and only album "Just Colour" was first surprising and then a bit disappointing. The best track on this album is indeed "Underground Railroad". It's a very strong song, a bit dark and maybe even acherontic. A hint of oriental melodies combined with bassy Jefferson Airplane sound and garagy trashing drums and voices. It's just great!

[1968] Merrell Fankhauser & H.M.S. Bounty - A Visit With Ashiya

listen to the song:

Merrell Fankhauser is mainly known from his work on Fapardokly debut and his recordings with the group MU. Since 1973 he had been living at Maui Island, Hawaï. Merrell: "After Mu broke up I went solo and moved deeper into the Maui rainforest, to study the Lost Continent and ancient Hawaiian history, that in itself is a mystical experience. Living 25 miles out in the jungle next to a free flowing stream by a waterfall can be very enlightening. When you don't have electricity or TV and you hear all the sounds of nature with no man made sound to pollute your mind you become aware and inspired in a new way. I was living with my girlfriend, violinist Mary Lee, and we stayed pretty much to a vegetarian diet, I did eat quite a bit of fresh fish, as it is so good in Hawaii. We played many places as a duo and had a steady gig at a club in Kahului for about 6 months."

[1968] Neighb'rhood Childr'n - Chocolate Angel

listen to the song:

I don't know, why it took me so long to discover this great band! on their debut album from 1968 they combine the early Jefferson Airplane sound with that of the psychedelic songs from the Peanut Butter Conspiracy. Also a heavy load Psychedelic Folk-Rock rythmns mashed up by Garage Rock. The song you can listen to above is a nice example for their sound (totally stoned!!). Get the complete album if you can!

[1968] The Litter - She's Not There

listen to the song:

Two years after the band was found in Minneapolis in 1966, a live set got recorded and released in 1999 by the Arf!Arf! label in combination with their 1967 album "Distortions". This track really grooves and is ffor now the most psychedelic track I have heared by this garage rock band. the organ is played in that mystic style and the way they are using their electric guitars just reminds of the Doors. Highly recommended!

[1968] Plastic Cloud - You don't Care

listen to the song:

The Plastic Cloud recorded their debut in 1967 and released it 1968. They sound like a garage version of Jefferson Airplane (before 1969). Enjoy the wild and psychedelic tune!

[1968] Blonde on Blonde - All Day, All Night

listen to the song:

Along withthe song "Country Life", this one was released by Blonde on Blonde on their 1968 single. Nice Ragas with Sitar and tabla, but it seems, like the band was gettin' bad, the older they grew. so let's enjoy this pre-debut album song.

[196X] Pearl Divers - Riding On A Rainbow

listen to the song:

this song is taken from the acid visions compilations. sailing the web, I found no bottle within a message for me, telling me, when this song was recorded, or even, who the Pearl Divers are... how can that be? welcome to the big world of psych comps, ... :D... well, nice soft psychedelic with echoing voices and nice lyrics... It sounds like it was recorded between 1966 and 68. Enjoy! greetings,

[1968] Boeing Duveen & The Beautiful Soup - Which Dreamed It

listen to the song:

as promised, the second side of the single "Jabberwocky/Which Dreamed It" (Parlophone R 5696, A - May 1968). This one sounds not as the other song, it's really fine acid folk. Sitar, flute, water and soft male voices, sounding a bit like Amber. well, I just can say, get that song and the single, listen to it and fall into a deep trip in mind! Get it here:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=XTYTAK4D

Enjoy! greetings, amadeus :)

"Boeing Duveen & The Beautiful Soup was the mastermind of Sam Hutt (later; Hank Wangford - more info's...), known by the British sixties counterculture as a "rock & roll doctor" who administered to musicians and practiced homeopathy and holistic medicine. He also dealt with drug casualties at rock festivals." ~"Tapestry of Delights Revisited by Vernon Joynson
